All I did was laugh and smile. Except for when I teared up. And that happened twice. J.’s big number was an absolute showstopper. But it comes right on the heels (see what I did there?) of Kevin Del Aguila’s “Fly Mariposa” number. Del Aguila is giving the daffiest performance currently on Broadway — but there’s a simple, accessible and glorious heart in his performance. And his Mariposa is genuinely funny but also genuinely moving. His performance is one of the many jewels in the show’s crown.
A perfect show? No. A terrific one with a VERY funny book? Yes. Borle makes it looks easy. J. is the show’s heart. Del Aguila is terrific. Can’t rave enough. A joyful way to spend a cold afternoon. |
