A great critic, and a wickedly brilliant and funny man. He will be missed, dearly.

I liked him best in his oppositional mode to Broadway and the big non-profits.

Every civilization gets the theater it deserves, and we get Miss Saigon, which means we can now say definitively that our civilization is over.

One of the most astute critics this city has ever had.

Agree. And a most kind man. I wrote to him often and he always replied graciously.

Michael Feingold will be best remembered as the Village Voice's esteemed theater critic. And he was chairman of the Obie Award .

But he also was a playwright/translator, earning 2 Tony Award nominations for his book and lyrics to Brecht and Weill's ''Happy End'' (1977).

(I once exchanged emails with Michael, after I posted on this board about Anna May Wong. Turns out he was a great admirer of her movies, too.)

Another giant has left us.

I first learned about Mr. Feingold in my mid teens, as I started falling head over heels with the works of Weill and Brecht, which led me to his translations, which I think still hold up today. From there I discovered his work as a critic as well. His writing was then and is now indispensable. May he rest in peace.

That just hit me like a ton of bricks. He was the crème de la crème of everything he attempted in life. I was privileged to spend time talking to him many times over the years and I never left the conversation without far more insight than when I arrived. At the same time, he was also a person who learned from others (although not always without pushback :-) ).

I also just smiled thinking about a couple of things involving Michael that have nothing to do with the theatre.

Requiescet in pace.

Do you know what his life has been like these last few years? Did he ever have a partner?

Oh, how sad, if true (I have no reason to doubt the poster). He was one of the truly great critics--I learned so much about how to think and write about theatre from reading him in the Voice. I was pleased when, some years ago, he one of the finalists for the Pulitzer, but sad, then and now, that he did not receive it.

My favorite critic...always so constructive. He should have received that Pulitzer.
