What 2022 theatergoing experience are you most thankful to have had?

It's strange to think that 2022 is poised to be the first full year of traditional theatergoing since the close of 2019. While that alone is reason to be very, VERY thankful, I'm curious: if you were to choose just one theatergoing experience from 2022 (thus far) for which you are most thankful, what would it be?

My choice: Beanie Feldstein's last performance in Funny Girl, which epitomized the unique symbiosis between audience and performers in live theatre.

Some sublime runners-up:
--The immersive Next to Normal in Barcelona
--Regents Open Air Theatre's wonderfully and surprisingly subversive Legally Blonde
--Into the Woods at City Center
--The final performance of Roundabout's Caroline, or Change
--K. Todd Freeman's performance in Downstate

My top 10 terrifically theatrical performances of 2022:

* Aaron Tveit in ''Moulin Rouge!'' on Broadway and Conor Ryan and Jack Cahill-Lemme in the national tour, playing in San Francisco
* Matt Doyle and Claybourne Elder in ''Company'' on Broadway
* Ali Ewoldt, Deven Kolluri, Maria Rizzo and Jake Loewenthal in ''She Loves Me'' at Signature Theatre in Arlington, Va.
* Nikita Burshteyn in ''As You Like It'' at San Francisco Playhouse

And I'm perennially thankful for this fascinating, fun and informative forum called All That Chat.

“Into the Woods:” The cast was uniformly spectacular, but I was especially moved by Brian d’Arcy James’ Baker and David Patrick Kelly’s Mysterious Man. Julia Lester as Little Red was also a standout.

“Company:” Matt Doyle’s “Not Getting Married Today;” Jennifer Simmard and Claybourne Elder’s hilarious performances; the new all-male, barbershop-quartet-flavored “You Could Drive a Person Crazy.”

“Merrily We Roll Along:” No, not the current one - for which I failed to get tickets. Was lucky enough to catch Theater Latté Da’s production in Minneapolis last month. Very well-acted and staged and quite moving. Reese Britts was the perfect Franklin Shephard.

I moved to the DC area not long before the pandemic, and I’m grateful that it hasn’t meant giving up the theatre I love so much. Some excellent companies here, lots of really provocative theatre, and I’ve been able to catch a number of plays that I missed when they were in NYC. (Last night I saw Alex Edelman’s show “Just For Us,” and next week I’m seeing “People, Places & Things.”)

Probably my favorite experience this year was “Heroes of the Fourth Turning” at Studio Theatre. I know I’m way behind in seeing it, but I was gripped throughout. A fascinating exercise in radical empathy.

I still get back to NY when I can, and I’ve loved the shows I’ve been able to see there too. Next week we’re doing a quick overnight and seeing “Kimberly Akimbo” and “Leopoldstadt.” Looking forward to both.

I’m grateful for all of you, for this site, for Ann and the others who administer it. Even through I’m now several hours away, I feel as close to Broadway as I was before because of all of you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Stay safe.

Difficult to pick from the 70+ wonderful shows I saw in 2022.

Here's my top three:
Into the Woods Encores: Heather Headley leading a bonkers packed cast, so glad I caught it, even if it cost an effing fortune. The enthusiasm of the crowd was contagious.

Fiddler in Yiddish: I just plain adored every minute of this production. I laughed, I cried, I kvelled, I kvetched. Oy veigh, does it get better than this ?

Kinky Boots: life-affirming sizzling show with outstanding singing and dancing, a grand spectacle with a relatable and touching message

I saw Phantom at last Thursday’s matinee. Absolutely spectacular. He was menacing, romantic, sexy, and thrilling.

Kevin Del Aguila is daffy and, surprisingly, deeply moving in Some Like It Hot. He’s giving a show-stealing performance. He is a complete joy. Just joy.

I’d give very honorable mentions to the entire casts of Leopoldstadt and Titanique and Ramin’s naked torso.

I saw the Radio City Christmas Spectacular this week. I’ve seen it many, many times and have, in the past, found myself bored. But this year’s show is the best in memory. It’s Rockette heavy — and that’s a VERY good thing. No silly, tedious story. Santa hosts it and, at one point, in some of the best graphics and use of technology I have ever seen, we ride with him from the North Pole to Radio City. The 3-D is … breathtaking. And the Rockettes’ legendary precision is on full display.

It’s wacky, silly, ridiculous, and delicious. I’ve seen it a few times, including it’s maiden voyage (ahem) at its new home at the Roth Theatre in Union Square. Marla is absolute perfection: such silly joy. She gets laughs before she even appears! But the cast is outrageous, too. Avionce! Russell! Don’t miss it.

Interesting! I remember seeing ads for Titanique when I was last in NY and it looked like such a typical not-really-theatre tourist show ala Blue Man Group, Tony & Tina's Wedding, Naked Whomever Singing, that I didn't explore.

I found it to be a wonderful and fun night... and i'm glad I saw it... but I think it has been wildly over-hyped, and/or perhaps it depends on what cast you get in the often-rotating cast (i loved the whole cast I saw, including an alternate(?) who wasn't in the digital playbill anywhere)...

But I did actually think it could be funnier. Several of the songs seemed to stop the flow of the pace/story/ridiculousness and comedy... because outside of the joke of the song coming, or what song it is, some of them just don't have much more to offer comedy-wise, and what they do offer isn't much different than what we already got. This isn't true of most of the songs but enough that I'm saying it.

But the cast (especially the actors playing the Billy Zane role and Rose's mother, and Celine of course who also co-created/co-wrote it) were so good and so funny.

So while I'm sure you'd have had a blast, I wouldn't lose sleep over missing it.

P.S. I also wish Celine had been incorporated much more into the actual proceedings. She never even steps in to play any of the characters, as I recall. I wanted to see this performer's version of Celine take on pretending to be in the story in a different role than just as Celine. But hey, it was very fun/funny/entertaining as is.

Hamilton or The Cherry Orchard it ain’t. And thank goodness. Titanique never takes itself seriously. Is it a must see? No. But for my money, it’s one of the best shows in New York right now.

Not quite sure how you came to that response for what I wrote... my post said nothing about wanting it to be some great masterwork of playwriting, or a nuanced drama or history play, nor did it say anything about how it should take itself more seriously... I asked that it amp up the humor even more, and find more ways to make comedy with the songs it chose.

For a theatrical funny good time, sure it is a must see. But I still found it over-hyped... you must admit (or maybe you won't give the level of hype you're offering), the show is VERY VERY hyped.

I will admit I was unfortunately sober... and I'll admit that I was in the standing section as well. I think being tipsy AND sitting probably contribute notably to scrutinizing the show beat by beat less. If I hadn't been rushing there from work, and if drinks at the theater weren't so damn expensive, that wouldn't have been the case.

That's funny, complete reverse for me. I don't quite understand all the breathless reactions to Milky White, though, I agree Kennedy Kanagawa did a lovely job.

As for Fat Ham... not to rub salt in the wound, but you really missed out. One of the most consistently entertaining evenings I've had in the theatre. Clever, but not overly clever in its parallels between Hamilton and the 'Fat Ham' family, a universally excellent cast and a charismatic lead actor who felt like he could be on the verge of a big career. That said, I believe someone on ATC who claimed to be in the know said it was coming back (perhaps as a Broadway transfer)?

I was surprised strong her acting was. She has really honed her comic sensibility over the years, especially while on Girls5Eva. And the vulnerability she brought so beautifully to Mary in JCS Live was put even to better use here.

I only wish that the wider audience had gotten to see opposite Neil Patrick Harris with whom I thought she had much better chemistry than Brian D'Arcy James.

Yes, to all of that! Not to mention how beautifully she sang the role. She managed to imbue a touch of her modern singer-songwriter tonality while staying true to the character. Her 'Moment in the Woods' received a long and enthusiastic ovation the night I saw Woods... almost stopped the show.

I don't recall thinking that she and BDJ lacked chemistry but I also have no frame of reference having not seen the pre-transfer Encores presentation.

The return of an in-person annual meeting of the American Theatre Critics Association, held over Veterans Day weekend in New York. The organizers were able to attract terrific speakers and panels, and the tour of the historic Hudson Theatre was eye-opening. And, there was enough free time to allow seeing Broadway and off-Broadway shows (I threw in an opera to boot).

Francis was exceptional. The only Lola whom I preferred was J. Harrison Ghee. Christian Douglas was also wonderful. It makes me sad that it couldn't find an audience because, while it came along comparatively soon on the heels of the Broadway production's closing, its message and queer positivity seems incredibly necessary right now.

While I had more of a mixed experience at MJ than you did, its choreography and dancers are really, really terrific.

I thought Ghee was wasted. and Borle too. Way too much dancing and what was once a genuinely funny plot is lost in all that woke-ness. LOVED Kevin Del Aquila, tho. I predict he's gonna win the Tony.
