| Ex-NYer, now in Richmond, VA. Won $25 lottery tickets and walked over to the Altria Theater (a former 1930's Lowes Movie Palace-now converted to a 3,500 seat barn). Anyway, hassle free and I figured that I would get to hear Adam Pascal, who I have enjoyed from the first time I saw him Off-Broadway in Rent, to Aida. He is a solid actor, yet his voice is sensational, magnificent and pitch perfect in the part. The show was fine. I reconfirmed my opinion, when I listened to the OBC of the show with Andy Karl. And no disrespect to Andy Karl (as I never saw him in the part), Adam Pascal felt those songs and delivered. Does anyone have any vivid memories of seeing a road show where the voice and talent clearly exceeded the OBC recording? | |

| I agree. Saw it in NYC with Karl and again when it came to Detroit with Pascal. It is a better show than the critics thought. They were both good but I liked Pascal better. | |

| I missed the opportunity to see Adam in Chicago when the final weekend was cancelled due to COVID. Hopefully the tour will make it back to Chicago with him in it. Fun Note- I did get to see Steve Kazee in the role during the Chicago out of town tryout. I missed Andy Karl during the Broadway run but would have liked to see him. He was so good in On the 20th Century. | |

| ...the Altria Theater (a former 1930's Lowes Movie Palace-now converted to a 3,500 seat barn). The Altria Theater was never a movie palace. It was originally built for Shriners of the Acca Temple Shrine and opened in 1927. The Carpenter Theatre however was a Loews Movie Palace and opened in Richmond just a year later. |

| But the replacement cast for SOMETHING ROTTEN was FAR better than the originators. Not taking away from the talent, but the replacement casting was spot on and made the show funnier and better. | |

| Adam Pascal's bio mentioned him being in the replacement cast of Something Rotten. DId you see him in that? Who else was in it, that made it better than the original. | |

| Kritzer was terrific in TWO roles in ''Beetlejuice'': Delia and Miss Argentina. And she WAS nominated by the Outer Critics and the Drama Desk. I also thought David Korins deserved to WIN the Tony for his zany funhouse set, which won Set Design from the Outer Critics and the Drama Desk. |

| Unbelievable! one of my fave all-time musicals. Korins' set was genius, the lighting was amazing, Alex Timbers is the total package (see BLOODY, BLOODY, ANDREW JACKSON), Perfect's music was...perfect. and don't get me started about HADESTOWN!!! |

| On the issue of the set... I have to assume the voters went with Hadestown because it was an original artistic landscape for a new show presenting two worlds... and the set brilliantly executed the practical real world and the theatrically simple but inventive life of the underworld... I was not as impressed with it as many... but I can acknowledge those things. Whereas Beetlejuice was an incredible set but it is a pretty literal and obvious theatrical translation of the film's (and animated TV series') set design and spaces. I am surprised to hear this is one of your all time favorite musicals, but to each their own. I found it much more enjoyable and less bad than I been told by many it is... but it's not going to make any lists of mine for favorite or best. And don't get me started on the once exciting and promising Alex Timbers. Moulin Rouge is one of the most embarrassingly directed musicals, and one the most absurdly wasted opportunities of stage direction given what the movie achieved directorally, that I've seen. |

| ''Beetlejuice'' isn't just some literal version of the film. Korins clearly evokes Tim Burton's spooky aesthetic from his movies, but given it his own spirited spin. The house itself goes through various transformations, and in the video (below), Korins reveals just how detailed and challenging it was. I love ''Moulin Rouge!'' and you hate it. We'll just agree to disagree. I find Timbers' work so visual and vibrant. Whether it's ''Beetlejuice,'' ''Moulin Rouge!,'' ''Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson'' or ''Here Lies Love,'' he creates immersive worlds that (to me) are thrillingly theatrical and Tony-worthy. |

| Technically, BJ was superb, but the songs and book are dull as dishwater. Not memorable. All mugging. I've seen it twice. Again, loved the tech and design of the show, but the much of the music just felt like teenage angsty yelling on-key. |

| I thought the teen angst was the good part of the score! It was the sloppy comedy songs that didn't work for me. I do wish songwriters realized that a joke in a song isn't funny if the rhyme isn't exact. I did enjoy the show, sort of despite itself. Yes, the book is all mugging, but enough of it got me anyway. And, to be fair, I'm a horror/Tim Burton nerd coming in. |

| Though I know it's a very un-Wayman Wong thing to answer... I have to wonder who you'd have not nominated to make room for Kritzer to have been nominated. I don't disagree that Kritzer was fantastic in 2 roles in this show* ... it was a fairly stacked category, with the nominees being: Ali Stroker – Oklahoma! as Ado Annie Carnes Lilli Cooper – Tootsie as Julie Nichols Amber Gray – Hadestown as Persephone Sarah Stiles – Tootsie as Sandy Lester Mary Testa – Oklahoma! as Aunt Eller Of those I'd have un-nominated Lilli Cooper, who I didn't think was anything special in a not especially great role in Tootsie, super talented though she is. I also think a case could be made that she should have been un-nominated in the Lead Actress category rather than nominated in Featured. She is the female lead of that show, but of course all the roles look featured compared to the Santino role. I'd probably have given the award to Amber Gray, even if Kritzer had been nominated. *(the fact that the show was dismissed by critics doesn't help it compete and win slots in nominating categories that are crowded, though it nonetheless managed nominated for Musical, Book, Score, Lead Actor, Scenic, Lighting and Costumes - though not director, which I think is key, and while I'm not big fan of the show or Alex Timbers, I'd have nominated him over Scott Ellis for Tootsie for sure) |

| There's a case for that. Though I thought she was good and memorable in it. And she's long overdue for a Tony so any nom to keep her in the mix of broadway royalty is fine by me. But I'd absolutely keep her over Cooper... who again I felt was both nothing special and in a not great role AND in the wrong category. |
