Alan, would you say that the "return engagement" that IBDB lists as opening in 1960 with the original stars, should be added to the performance total of WSS's long run?

Funny you should ask. I wrote a long version of the post in which I discussed that. I tend to think it should at least be mentioned in a discussion of the run, although I would not give the run as 981 performances. It does remain the longest return engagement in Broadway history, by a good distance, and if you do count 981, then the production is in the top 10 among 1950s Broadway musicals. I think it's no. 8.

And it's interesting to note that even with the return added in Sondheim remains (I think) the only major Broadway composer/lyricist of his era not to have a show that ran 1,000 performances. Jerry Herman had 3!

Betty Comden and Adolph Green were also never associated with a show that ran more than 1,000 performances. Neither was Leonard Bernstein or Cy Coleman.

Were you by any chance sending me a psychic message last night? As I was trying to fall asleep I was rethinking my statement and I thought, "OMG -- there were Comden and Green ... and Bernstein ... and Cy Coleman."

If you were sending me the message -- I got it -- and thank you!

You're welcome! I was probably too soused after Thanksgiving dinner Thursday night to send psychic messages to anyone--but you never know! ; )

Long Running Comden & Green Broadway Shows

You're technically correct. However, The Will Rogers Follies ran for 981 (official) performances and 33 previews for a total of 1014 showings. Therefore, the show was performed 1014 times at the Palace theatre.

Applause had a total run of 896 performances and 4 previews so the show was performed 900 times at the Palace. Bells Are Ringing ran for 924 performances at the Shubert and Alvin Theatres. Both shows were considered long running hits for their era.

You're also correct that The Will Rogers Follies did play more than 1,000 performances on Broadway, counting the previews. To this day it never occurs to me to include the previews in calculating the run of any Broadway show. This is because I'm so old I can remember the era when previews were relatively rare (they only started becoming common in the Sixties), and the theater reference books of that era never included previews in what was given as "the run." So I tend to forget about them. I believe Variety and I know IBDb still tally the previews and "the performances" separately.

Yes, I have thought about that. Are you thinking about teams or just composer-lyricists? Forum at least came close, with no footnote needed about a return engagement, but still not quite.

It remains a sadness that neither Maltby and Shire nor Grossman and Hackady, two teams who had plenty of talent and skill, never had a hit Broadway musical. Had Love Match made it to Broadway, Maltby and Shire might have gotten hired for more Broadway shows earlier, even though Love Match surely would have failed. But it would have left behind a great cast recording, had there been one. Ditto for How Do You Do I Love You.

Grossman and Hackady, of course, had their chances, but didn't get the right shows. Always shows about the wrong character!

Well, I was thinking about any composer or lyricist who was active during the alleged post-"Oklahoma!" "golden age" and somewhat beyond.

Actually, I have to take it back, because I'd certainly consider Harold Arlen to be a major composer and his longest-running show was "Bloomer Girl" at only 654 performances.

But it remains surprising that someone of Sondheim's stature never hit the 1,000 mark. As Hamlet said on the subject:

"... the play, I remember, pleased not the million; 'twas caviare to the general: but it was an excellent play, well digested in the scenes, set down with as much modesty as cunning."
