It used to be if one was a male he was an actor, if a female, she was an actress. Today, however, I don't know what the committee will do.

... In "Matilda" Bertie Carvel played a female character and was nominated as Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role In A Musical

Mary Rylance won Best Performance By An Actor In A Featured Role In A Play for Olivia in "Twelfth Night."

Mary Rylance won Best Performance By An Actor

Right, but those were men playing female characters. We're discussing the identity of the performer here. An openly non-binary performer has not yet been nominated so it poses a new challenge to the Tony committee.

Oh, I hadn't realized J. Harrison Ghee is non-binary. I thought people were discussing the character. Thanks for the clarification.

It would seem most logical and appropriate to ask the performer the category they prefer. Is there really any other answer here as to who should make this decision?
