It's augmented, yet has a similar sound to the music coming from the pit at the August Wilson, which I've heard twice. I find the overture tells the tale: it's both homage to the original and yet slightly thinner, with a metallic edge on some of the melodic lines. More instruments didn't correct that. On several of the numbers, the tempi seem accelerated, also noticed by someone on Twitter as well. But it certainly showcases the finally decided-upon leading lady, as the parade this morning highlighted. This is now the production they intended, and it's the crowd-pleasing hit Broadway celebrates. I don't know anyone who has seen Michel who's disappointed, and the album makes the case. |
