I will only see this as a devotee...
The Menier production directed by Maria Friedman was one of the worst major professional Sondheim productions I've sat through, maybe even the worst (the Roundabout Follies was much better, and I'm struggling to think of one I was more let down by... oh, Doyle's Pacific Overtures!), let alone of Merrily... and I continue to be baffled by the praise for it. I am hoping this cast makes it better than the Menier cast did. Many very talented actors were in it and nonetheless were not good and didn't raise the bar of the terribly directed production of a bad version of the show. |
