"Hey, Mr. Macy's"????

Any comments on the lyric change for the Thanksgiving Parade version? Why not "Hey, Mr. Macy" given that that was his name, not Mr. Macy's?

Did they really think people wouldn't get the reference otherwise?

Had they really wanted to keep "Macy's" they could have done something like:

"Hey, look, it's Macy's - here I am!" or "Hey, live from Macy's, here I am!" or even adding a pickup to become "NBC at Macy's - here I am!" Etc.

"Hey, Mr. Macy" would have been just as effective and wouldn't have sounded so d-u-m.

Just drove me crazy. Or is that crazy's?

Hoping everyone had a nice holiday!

Another lyric question but not from Macys Parade.

In the current finale, is the lyric sung as “stiff upper nose, kid” like in the new cast album or “stiff upper chin, kid” which is what I’ve seen performed online. Curious which way it is now.

As for the Macys performance, the number played much better than when it’s been done on one of the morning shows in Times Square. Mr Macy and Mr Macys would both be proud. I’m also okay with the choreography not being from the show. When On the Town opened in a similar manner a few years ago, their dance break from their dance heavy show hurt the number for that specific parade imo.

My vote to open next years show: New York, New York. “Those little town blues…” transitioning from uptown to Herald Square could work nicely. Not that I actually get a vote or know anything about what the show will actually be like…

What we should be talking is the choreography which was kind of wonderful. Of course there is no dancing in the actual show.

This is a good point, on multiple levels.
First of all I didn’t envy the choreographer, who had to turn this idiosyncratic strong woman solo, Don’t Rain on My Parade, into basically a full-company production number for possibly the first time in history… complete with all the tempo oddities in that last minute and a half, including full stops and several time signature changes, going from a march-slash-swing beat to a 60s musical theater power beat to a double-time rideout, with multiple ritards, fermatas and accelerandos… and who, like you say, actually did a surprisingly good job with it.

Then I wondered, where was that brand of choreography in the production? Not that you’d want Fanny’s solos to have danced backup throughout, but it was not only certainly more interesting than the little bit of musical staging offered in Henry Street and A Temporary Arrangement, but better than any dancing in the entire show except for Jared Grimes’s hoofing and the 1 or 2 other tap moments (all of which, one assumes, were handled by the “additional tap choreographer”, up and coming sensation Ayodele Casel, and not the one credited for most of the humdrum workaday dancing).

None of this is in itself a problem, and I’m sure that parade opening sold as many tickets as just about any Broadway show ever showcased on the parade. But it does suggest, if nothing else, a more ambitious production than what’s on stage at the August Wilson, and it made me wonder a) if the show’s regular choreographer actually did it, and b) if in the rehearsal room they’d ever tried or even discussed similar ways to make this Funny Girl different.

I thought it was a savvy and shrewd way to showcase ''Don't Rain on My Parade'' to sell tickets. It's why they're there, right?

Besides, we've already seen Michele recreating the Broadway staging when she did this song on ''Good Morning, America.''

And I'm assuming home audiences realize this number isn't staged the same way onstage with hundreds of parade participants.

Sometimes, musical numbers get reworked or cut down for the Tonys, too. Or they do mini-mashups. No big deal!

Seems like a blatant truth-in-advertising problem to me to show choreographed numbers as if they represent the show people can buy tickets to.

Having seen and admired his choreography on several shows, I wouldn't be surprised if Jared Grimes had a hand in the choreography at the Macy's parade.

1) Someone had to approve the change in advance since it was pre-recorded for lip-synching. I'm sure there were several possibilities considered.

2) Saying "Hey, Mr. Macy's" (as if she doesn't know there is a person named "Macy") is appropriate for Fanny Brice to sing. (She could have said, "Hey Mr. Automat" or "Mr. Barney's" in another context.)

It is a legit question for an out of the blue post. I was surprised no one posted anything yesterday. I thought funny girl, lion king and some like it hot worked well. As for the lyrics, I knew it didn’t sound right but I couldn’t tell you what it is supposed to be (someone posted below). It’s hard to know all the lyrics for thousands of broadway tunes.

For this year's annual NBC broadcast of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Lea Michelle (the new star of the Funny Girl revival, in case you didn't know) opened the proceedings with "Don't Rain On My Parade" (surprisingly enough lol). But in place of "Hey, Mr. Arnstein," (the lyric as written in the song, in case you've never heard it) she sang "Hey. Mr. Macy's." Not "Hey, Mr. Macy," but "Hey, Mr. Macy's."

THAT lyric. :-)

Michele with a final e. (As I see you've spelled it "Michel" more than once now.)

And yet, with only one L (I've sometimes added an L. So you're not the only one...)
