Although Irene was born in the Bronx, she moved into our Mitchell-Lama mid-Manhattan co-op when she was 10 (53 years ago). Our building was brand new. She was already a professional. Occasionally she would entertain at a co-op event. Her mom was a cashier at our ground floor grocery. Her mom, of course, took pride in her accomplishments and we watched Irene's professional growth (which seemed to wane as she searched for adult roles -- I may be wrong -- and just lost track of her). What a talent. |
