This was my favorite Broadway musical of the 2004-05 season. Joe DiPietro came up with a wonderfully witty book to this Elvis jukebox musical.
His story of ''mismatched lovers, deception and disguise'' was inspired by Shakespeare's comedies: ''Much Ado About Nothing,'' ''Twelfth Night,'' ''As You Like It'' and ''A Midsummer's Night Dream.'' The repurposing of Elvis' hits was so clever, and Cheyenne Jackson gave a star-making tour de force.
