| I think queerness is more about the reality that's made on stage, or perhaps more precisely, the way that reality is subverted as it is being made, which is crucial to the architecture of Fat Ham. And I think queerness is about how the audience is absorbed into the making of the play, which was true of Fat Ham at The Public. It will be interesting to see if the play is still able to achieve that in a large proscenium house, rather than a more intimate, thrust space (and in a space that will likely have a larger White contingency in the audience, who are generally less inclined to participate in the experience of the storytelling). I really thought they were going to take this one to Circle in the Square, but perhaps Roundabout gave them a much better offer. Being at American Airlines certainly gives them a cushion in terms of sales that they wouldn't have in a purely commercial run. |
