It's very complicated. What you say about specific shows is obviously true, and the power of the Times is more at the margins than ever. (And it has been headed that way pretty much since the newspaper has become a diminished form of media.) There are a ton of forces at play, and how they fit together for any given show is not some formula. The only force that I think is reliable is the one I learned maybe 35 years from a now-dead sage: most people don't go to see shows they don't want to see. But there are a lot of forces we can comment on beyond that. Here are 2-3. Marketing Who sat down and decided there was a market for KPOP on Broadway? on what basis? And who was brought in to tap into that market? (I'd say the answers are an indictment.) Covid Several points. One is that there have been some pipeline issues that still haven't been overcome. Another is that despite our collective denial, the market is not where it was overall. And as it relates to the Times, there is a direct correlation between the locus of its traditional power and the people who are not going back (or at least not much, Leopoldstadt being an exception for some, and I have heard them say so). Money Finally, we are seeing a shift in the model for big money people producing. A number of shows have rich people not just writing checks but interested in getting involved. And that creates a subset of shows that can flop bad but still satisfy the big money people because they feel they produced something that ought to be on Broadway. (This has an interesting tangent related to non-profits, but that's for another thread maybe.) Anyway, I guess the point here is that it's easy to put all of one's blame eggs in one basket, but that is too simplistic almost all of the time. Lots of things affect things "a little." Sometimes.
