The other big problem with KPOP is that it just wasn't very good. I didn't think it was very good Off-Broadway, but the immersive experience gave a lot of people something to invest in that wasn't the creaky scenes and the hollow dramatic conflicts. The best thing about that version was the 20-minute concert at the end, which isn't enough to make a musical out of. In bringing it to Broadway (a noble gesture for a lot of reasons, but not an idea that I thought was wise), they stripped away the frame that excited most people, and they didn't get a stronger writer to create a workable book, leaving us with... a cool concert.
There are, of course, other factors that contributed to its failing (and yes, being heavily Korean in a country that only really cares about America, the UK, and maybe Europe was one of them), but at its core, it wasn't a great show. |
