After trying to play catch-up this morning, I saw that among other things, Abraham Lim took Jesse Green to task for making references to the cast's "squinty eyes" – an unforgivable offense, if it had taken place – when in actual reality, what Green had said was that the lighting design was "squint-inducing". Meaning too bright, harsh, and glaring for his own eyes, and presumably much of the audience. (In his opinion.)
That kind of mischaracterization of what someone actually said is something we've been seeing far too much of in recent years, and to my mind is the kind of thing that calls his entire response into question ... because not only is it clear that Jesse Green was not being racist when he described the lighting, it makes it seem as if Lim is actually LOOKING for excuses to call Green racist. I'm sure there are good points being made here, and a discussion to be had – but after that kind of distortion, to say "Gee, I wonder what Lim will have to say about this" seems entirely justifiable in context, and not even necessarily as a "Tee Hee" moment; rather, it suggests, fairly in my opinion, that perhaps Lim is not the best person in that company to make the case. |
