| I think the aging process affects a lot of reasons some folks go less. The one you mention is certainly a significant one as is just having the energy to get there in the first place. There was a time when I saw 150-200 performances (or even more) in a year. No more (and I'm in my low 60s). And back then I almost always went out after. Now, even if a show is over at 9 I almost always just go home. It's no secret that this board skews older and I suspect this thread, just by its tone, is even older. I'd also note that while it is true some folks have moved on, it's also true that the theatre has moved on from what some people find appealing. That's totally normal, but some fight either accepting that or attempting to meet what's new on its own terms (as I generally do, at least so far lol). I've shared this before here at some point: my grandmother started taking me to the theatre and especially to concerts at a really young age. She was quite old even then, because my parents married late and so had she. She hated Gershwin ("junk") and she hated Bernstein ("a racket"). This seems hard to believe now (and ironically, I have always worshipped at LB's altar). But she did not sound that different from some posts about contemporary composers I read on here. Anyway, so yes, I think we sometimes have to move on, for whatever reason, but maybe we can try to accept it a little less judgmentally (and I have always had the sense that you do). ETA: I just saw your post down the page about "loudness" in the 50s which I think fits nicely into the same general topic I discuss here. |
