Wasn't there a different Funny Girl production proposed 6 or 7 years ago with Michele as Fanny? However, it never came together. Perhaps because of financing? Lea was criticized on ATC (brutally at times) as not being naturally funny, not being enough of a clown to portray Brice. I don't remember the diva accusation being mentioned back then, but it may have been. How quickly we forget!

Beanie was cast after her success in Dolly on Broadway, roles in two money-making movies, and a lead role in the FX anthology series.

In retrospect (and Monday morning quarterbacking), it's obvious that Lea Michele is the right choice to portray Fanny Brice on Broadway. If only the producers could have had the foresight to use a crystal ball to peer into the future! Oh, well!
