| We often associate Sondheim with intricate rhymes, wordplay, and complex extended song structures - but then there are two songs in the often seemingly complicated Passion that are really disarming in their simplicity and economy. "Loving You" (in the show context, just that single refrain) and "No One Has Ever Loved Me" really say all they need to say in their very concise manner. I think whether one loves the sow or not, or buys its conceit, here are two moments when the characters are able to very simply state the truth they've been struggling to express all along. And for me, both songs are no less profound and no less complete than all the very textually complex songs he wrote throughout his career. |
