| If Equity requires understudies for every role, it is new. I have not heard of such a change, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been one. Certainly there have been shows in which there definitely was no understudy for the star, but the examples that come to mind immediately are in the distant past (e.g., Merman in Happy Hunting, Elizabeth Taylor in The Little Foxes, although she did have one for the post-Broadway tour). Standbys and understudies are not always listed, which can make it confusing. Gretchen Wyler, for example, was the Margo standby in Applause, but never listed. Mary Small was Stritch's unlisted standby in Goldilocks. Many other examples in Broadway history. For example, no one was ever listed as the Sherlock Holmes standby or understudy in Baker Street, but I can't imagine there wasn't one. What about shows like Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway? Or The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe? No standby listed for Jackman or Tomlin, and I can't imagine there was one, especially not for the former. So I tend to think that there has not been a rule change. |
