Occasionally, one-person shows do have standbys, e.g., Maureen Anderman for Vanessa Redgrave in The Year of Magical Thinking, but obviously it often makes no sense to have one. Anyway, as far as I know, producers are not now and never have been required to hire an understudy or standby for every role. Most of the time it does make sense to have one, but it is not a requirement. If I am wrong that this is still the case, I imagine someone will correct me.
