I think part of the issue is that the date settings for the different scenes are far enough apart that you essentially have to start over again figuring out who is who, and many of the characters are not that distinctive and are only given simple broad strokes in the short amount of time that year is taking place. This is one of the very few plays that I think would be better if it were longer.

I agree Stoppard's intended main point is not the one that you might think it would be when the play starts but, for me, the end felt kind of rushed and wasn't given the emphasis it deserved. Here, too, a longer scene would have been better IMO.
