I've been quite vocal about my disdain for this terrible play. However, I will concede this particular question brings out the best in the play. Norris seems to be always placing the audience in a position to have to navigate the space between fact and fiction. Child molestation is bad - fact. Child molestation can be love - fiction. This act one scene you are referring to, including the lie detector sequence, for me worked so well because it balanced this conflict between fact and fiction. In fact, it isn't until Felix is told not to proceed without council that there is any semblance of hard facts for us to hold on to. That really ratcheted up the tension in the scene.

I thought this was the most successful scene in the play because it was logically sound (unlike literally every other scene in the play) and still dramatized the theme Norris seemed to be working with. The acting was stellar, as well.
