| Small band, yes, and up in a room with (closed maybe) windows (I don't love the set). This is one of my favorite musicals for listening to the band/orchestra. But in the brassy parts, there's a fine line between musically blaring and being off note (I'm not a musician, though at one time I was a drummer, but I think I have a decent layperson's ear). Sometimes that happened at the performance I attended. Otherwise, which I don't think I've mentioned earlier, the score, Lindsay Mendez, and Reg Rogers are my highlights of this productions. Groff and Radcliffe work really hard and are talented and enjoyable, of course (I didn't know/forget how short Radcliffe is, and I loved that he is quite the animated imp here, unable to contain himself, which is Charleyish). Radcliffe is great with the pattery stuff. Love the ensemble/blob - very distinctive assorted characters (that kind of blob) but broad. Love Mendez' and some of the other costuming (Groff's is not flattering, and does Charley wear the same outfit throughout? Groff almost does). This is by far the most sympathetic Frank I've seen. Maybe it's Groff (he seems to nice, even when Frank is being mean) or the staging. It made me think, "What did Frank do that's so bad?" - until he commits to the commercial gig. He should have asked Charley. Caveat: if this score is played and sung well, I'm in. If other elements don't work, I'm fine with letting the Sondheim part just wash over me. I don't keep up with all the changes and variations, didn't see the original (or any youth-cast) production, really liked the London production in person (on film/tape, not so much), same with the Fiasco. I'm pretty easy when it comes to Merrily, but I can nit pick. |
