| Never having seen the original 1981 production, I can’t really answer your question with any kind of expertise or personal experience (although I’ve certainly read a lot written about it). But I do believe it was Maria Friedman who added this specific framing device. If Frank considering going back to basics and reuniting with Charley was not Furth’s intention, Sondheim was clearly okay with this reinterpretation. It definitely works for me. For what it’s worth, I also found the new ending of the recent “My Fair Lady” revival perfectly valid. |
