I saw Ain't No Mo' at the Public in Apr., 2019 and found it hysterically funny, but it was a very edgy sort of funny. While many people around me also laughed a lot, there were some, noticeably black folk, who didn't find the show in the least bit amusing. A few walked out. One older gentleman in the row in front of me occasionally gave me dirty looks and made a comment to me when the show ended.
When you're in a small space like the Public, laughter can be very contagious, especially when so many are laughing. However, watching a tape/film of the same show by yourself in your home might be a totally different experience, especially when the material can be considered offensive if you aren't able to laugh at it. |
