Yes, there is that pause - and Sondheim is very particular about trying to phrase words so that thoughts are not arbitrarily interrupted (as so often lyricists do simply because they come to the end of a line and need a pause).
An actor can justify the pause - a moment of deeply felt guilt, that he brought the deceiver into the home and thus caused Fosca's subsequent betrayal by him.
