| Sondheim earlier said that David Carroll was the first Robert to make "Being Alive" work and then that Adrian Lester was the first to do something else. Then after Barrowman, the Doyle production and/or Esparza was the first to do something. He kept saying that various Roberts were the first to make something work, seemingly forgetting what he had said about earlier Roberts. I used to wish he would just not say these things. For one thing, it was making earlier Roberts who might have known he had seen them feel bad. He used to say that the dead were precisely the people of whom one should speak ill because you couldn't hurt their feelings (as discussed in the recent Feinstein-Sondheim thread), but then he would say things like that about various actors who played Robert, which must have made others feel bad. And from to time he would say gratuitously cruel things about people like Merman and Elizabeth Taylor while they were still alive. |
