Musical comedy is hard. So it’s a pleasure to see one as expert as SOME LIKE IT HOT which is chiefly an exaltation of musical theatre craft. And of sharp skill. It was a risky proposition to reiterate this material, which could easily have seemed outworn, but the show casually contemporizes pastiche and drag—and drag as pastiche—so that what’s familiar seems almost prescient, predictive of our current changed and changing perspectives on gender itself. There’s no hectoring here; nobody’s schooling the audience. Instead, there is grace, wit, and larky style. And while there’s nothing specifically original about this show, innovation is not the point; the score and the choreography in particular make a virtue, a celebration even, of familiarity. SOME LIKE IT HOT is impressively proficient. It wants only to extol the form and the tradition of musical comedy performance. It’s satisfying because, on every level that counts, it’s entirely, giddily authoritative. In these enervating days, that’s tonic enough for me.
