| I don't think it's entirely fair to assume that those men dressed as women would have considered themselves "non-binary". There are plenty of men who like to dress as women sometimes, or live as women sometimes, and want to be living in that woman experience, want to be called she and her, and are also comfortable being called he/him when presenting that way. Not all crossdressers would want to be considered non-binary or trans. Some people like expressing male AND female, and like living as male or female, or both. That isn't automatically non-binary, in some cases it is quite binary, but switching around. And of course surely many might have liked non-binary, or they/them... but I just don't think that from looking at photos of men dressed in women's clothing (a binary take on clothing in the first place) and seemingly living life as a woman means that you can assume that's how they lived their entire lives or wanted to and that they would have rejected gendered pronouns. These also may have been trans women who would have wanted surgery etc if that had been available to them then, and also may have then very much wanted she/her pronouns. Who knows. But let's not assume, or erase other nuanced layers of the gender expression queer spectrum. It is certainly proof that playing with gender expression or men living or wanting to live some or all of their lives in a female experience or role was happening... it's been happening for centuries. Beyond that it's speculation to assign them x y or z identity or intention or internal monologue. | |
