| To my surprise I really thought this was fun. After such a rash of musicals made from movies that turned out flat, like Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, Bullets Over Broadway, Honeymoon In Vegas, etc, etc, this one actually seemed to me to transcend the original. That is except for the flat performance by Sugar. The songs expressed pain and triumph over disappointment, but the performance didn't match the words. Still, the direction, the choreography, the sets, the costumes all looked great. To me, this is what I think people who come to see a Broadway show want to see. (But I've been wrong on that reaction before.) It reminded me a little of Crazy For Me, except without the great music. I was most pleasantly surprised by Borle. Not a big fan until now. Although thickening in the waist, he hits all the comedy bits perfecting and nailed the dancing. Kind of a combination of Donald O'Connor and Mickey Rooney. But, most hilariously for me, is that when he puts on the dress and big glasses he reminded me of my favorite of 50 years ago -- Arnold Stang. Am I wrong? |
