Whatever we think of the Post, and count me among those who haven't touched it in years, this sentiment may partially explains the poor ticket sales pre-opening.
"When musicians Joe (Christian Borle) and Jerry (J. Harrison Ghee) first don frocks and wigs to disguise themselves while on the run, there is a collective exasperation of 'You again?'”
An audience eager for something new has indeed seen quite a lot of this in the last decade, and indifference doesn't necessarily translate into being anti-{pick relevant word, subjectively determined}. I'd argue that it's not so much a sociopolitical backlash as trope/storytelling fatigue. Even if this is the best and best-updated use of the conventions, some people feel that they've seen this tale. That said, if any show looks likely to move to hit status, it's this one. |
