What difference does it make if it somehow "officially qualifies" as a film? This reminds me of early arguments about whether Netflix offerings should officially qualify as TV. If it's in a cinema, I've got no problem with its box office being reported with other screenings. (In fact, it's probably underreporting, and not including screenings that took place at arts venues that don't report their box office take.) As for the limited number of showings, The Hours was in 826 screens nationwide. The Whale was on 6. Should the latter's box office be reported?

Either way, a live arts event charting that high for the weekend box office seems like nothing but good news.
