The spiral of costs is just unsustainable for commercial off Broadway. A one person show a few seasons back cost $200,000 to produce, $25,000 a week to run, in a 96 seat theatre. A 5 character play in a 199 seat theatre, just ebfore the pandemic, cost $850,000 to produce. A 3 character play cost $550,000. Weekly costs are $50-60,000. At least. Its daunting to say the least.

The rise of not for profit off Broadway has basically killed commercial off Broadway. They have ongoing capital to nurture playwrights and productions, they are 'classy' places for stars to work - stars who will never be accused of being in a flop because the 8-10 week run will finish one way or another.

Almost all plays and musicals by important writers or up and coming new writers are done by the not for profits - Vineyard, The Public, MTC, Roundabout, MCC, Ars Nova, Playwrights Horizons , LCT, NYTW and on and on and on. They have staffs to support new work, and a loyal audience to buy tickets.

Commercial off Broadway is expensive to produce and run, and its very hard to get A list material to produce there.

LITTLE SHOP isnt that much of anomaly - an off Broadway hiu returniung to off Broadway with a star, at a classy venue (Westside). Not the same as producing a new play or musical from a standing start.
