Sondheim said that to Frank Rich in a public interview during the Kennedy Center Sondheim festival.
Fuller version of the quote: "People who try to update Company make a mistake, I think. It should either be performed as a ’70s piece or with no date, but not with an attempt to make it ’90s or contemporary."
Of course, this was after the Donmar Warehouse production, which seemed to try to update it and which Sondheim praised.
