Regardless of whether Wolverton or Ashman or any of the dozens of other people who worked on the film suggested the original line and then someone later suggested to change - it is a glaring recision from the soundtrack to the film if you know both. And it’s been on my radar for three decades so nothing new here. The soundtrack version implies if the beast could earn anyone’s love regardless of gender, he would be free from his self-imposed captivity. It was the beginning of the 1990s when this was changed so…
In the Howard doc, there are differing POVs from the filmmakers about whether Beauty and the Beast is an AIDS allegory. The fact Ashman was central to its creation leaves that open to interpretation. HUMAN AGAIN (restored on Broadway and in later releases of the film) only adds to that only interpretation.
But BroadwayMaven, it is a little click-baity… |
