| It may be that many if not all of the performers volunteered their services last night. For that they should be thanked. The advertising for the benefit reading of YOUR OWN THING was blatantly misleading, and Red Bull Artistic Director Jesse Berger should be called out on it. It turns out that a dozen of the highly publicized guest star performers never appeared on stage. Instead, their pre-recorded voices were used in various cartoonish commentaries. Only Robert Cuccioli and Bruce Vilanch were present. And they didn’t have much to do. Such a peculiar presentation of YOUR OWN THING. It was obviously well-rehearsed, perhaps too much so. Lesli Margherita screeched and mugged for two endless hours. Lilli Cooper gave us pouty face, instead of youthful innocence and charm. The three Apocalypses over-acted. Someone must have thought it was a cute idea to cast Lilli Cooper and Eddie Cooper as twins Viola and Sebastian. But they don’t have the slightest resemblance to each other. Fortunately, Santino Fontana was grounded in his role, providing the only credible performance of the evening. I saw Leland Palmer in YOUR OWN THING years ago at Off-Broadway’s Orpheum Theater. It was sweet and clever. What was presented last night at Symphony Stage bore no relationship to it. A disappointing evening and a waste of time and talent. |
