IPHIGENIA IN AULIS FROM UTC61 AVAILABLE NOW

A virtual experience with book and podcast

Untitled Theater Company No. 61 has released its new audio drama podcast, Iphigenia in Aulis from UTC61, a companion piece to Iphigenia in Aulis: Age of Bronze Edition, published by Image Comics. Both feature an adaptation/ translation by Edward Einhorn of the play by Euripides. The book is a graphic novel/script hybrid with art by Eric Shanower. The podcast is available on Apple, Spotify, Podbean, and other podcast hosts. They are meant to be experienced together, though they can also be enjoyed individually. As a whole, the two together are a new experiment in virtual theater, a mixed visual/audio experience from two different media.

The play chronicles King Agamemnon's dilemma when he promises to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to Artemis, hoping that the goddess will bring the wind that will take his stalled ships to Troy. He regrets his promise and wants to reverse his decision, but any reversal threatens to invoke fury of the mob.

The adaptation was originally produced onstage at La MaMa in 2013. The cast, most of whom were in the original production, features Michael Bertolini, Ivanna Cullinan, Laura Hartle, David Mandelbaum, Paul Murillo, Eric Emil Oleson, Jenny Lee Mitchell, Sandy York, and Emily Clare Zempel. Sound design is by Ian W. Hill .

When reviewing the original production, Backstage wrote "Laura Hartle is luminous as Iphigenia, moving from buoyant innocence to strength with a quiet grace. Even more riveting is Ivanna Cullinan's Klytemnestra, whose initial cool confidence crumbles into the tempestuous rage of a mother wronged. Her flinty gaze as the lights dim is chilling, a hint of what will befall Agamemnon years later when he returns from Troy."

Untitled Theater Company No. 61 (UTC61) is a Theater of Ideas: scientific, political, philosophical, and above all theatrical. Since Covid, UTC61 has mixed live and virtual performance. UTC61 has been performing independent theater in New York for over 25 years, collaborating with venues such as HERE, The New Ohio, 3LD, La MaMa, The Brick, and other downtown spaces. Recent UTC61 work has been Critic's Picks in The New York Times, The Village Voice , and Time Out New York. For more information visit www.untitledtheater.com or iphigeniainaulis.com.
