Was a great night all around and the audience was eating it up. Works better in the concert format, and the dry wit of the narrator helps us all relax a little about the show's problems and just have fun with it.
The cast delivered on all the big numbers. Ramin Karimloo's Anthem gave me chills and Solea Pfeiffer's Someone Else's Story was another highlight.
There were a few rough patches, assuming since it was only a one-night concert rehearsal time was limited. And the sound design left something to be desired. Darren Criss was definitely mis-cast as he could not hit the notes but he worked hard and tried to play the part.
Even considering the success of the barebones Into the Woods, I don't see how this gets a Broadway run in its current format. They would need to do a lot more development but it is purely a concert with stand mics right now, but I loved hearing the songs live and would go again if I could. The music is just so good. |
