The idea that artists are supposed to give up their income attacks the problem the wrong way. Why is it up to the artists to give up their small share rather than producers who have a bigger slice?

Nottage went on the record over a decade ago to reveal how little she and other playwrights make. When Intimate Apparel was the most produced play in America she could not live off it, because subsidiary rights, agent fees, etc. ate up all but about 30% of the royalties.

Around the same time the book Outrageous Fortune made the same point. Playwrights make very little off of stage productions of their work--even on Broadway.

It has gotten a little better, but it still is not good.
