| Haven't seen a will-call line this long since early last season, but it was clear that much of the audience this frigid afternoon had used TDF or the equivalent (the Telecharge "rush" offer). They're filling seats, these difficult-to-sell weekday performances, and it completed the house. I think my own enjoyment of this show, which began within seconds and lasted thru the curtain call, is atypical but maybe useful as a barometer. I had zero interest in any new iteration of the material, having seen Sugar in my youth and never really counting Some Like it Hot among my favorite films, Monroe aside. I was there today because of the reviews and TDF. And I found it fresh and in every way delightful. Not much to add, except the synergy of craft and inspiration really works here, a very accomplished score providing a wave of syncopation for an energy-sustaining metronome setting. The show moves from the top, and keeps moving through the brilliantly conceived and executed final chase, already much discussed at this board. This is a "Hot" for people who don't especially dig the film. I don't mean that as glib. What I most appreciated: when we get to the "I Am What I Am" moment, Shaiman and Whitman give us a joyful paean to discovery, sans anger or anthemic call to action. I teared up at "You Coulda Knocked Me Over with a Feather" because the marvel-of-a-triple threat Ghee negotiates the personal epiphany as as a profoundly exhilarating release, a moment of ultimate freedom. The song is so perfect, tonally and in sync with the period sound, it's almost hard to top, arriving midway through act two. But it left the biggest impression. This show deserves the large audience critics predicted it would attract. It could even be that thing we often debate: a tourist show. But it has winter of 2023 to get through, and, looking at the box office during previews, we have reason to wonder if it has much advance. |
