When I first saw KINKY BOOTS, I too marveled at how bad the accents were. I mean, couldn't they have hired whomever worked on BILLY ELLIOT training all those cast members for years and years?
But, when I returned to see it again later in the run, it seemed to me that the cast was taking the emphasis off the accents and toning everything way down. And that worked better in the sense that it made the horrific accents less noticable. I assume the accents were better in the UK production.
Another instance of this kind of toning down of an accent that's just not working was Chita Rivera as the Puffer in the revival of THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. I have no idea what she was doing early in the run and on the album, but later on the accent got much less noticeable and worked better. |
