| Sunday in the Park with George is one of the most non-commercial musicals Sondheim's written... Sunday in the Park with Jake had a short run (because of Jake's schedule), a shorter run than almost all other Sondheim broadway productions... and made money. Into the Woods is making a profit already isn't it? Doesn't matter, my point is that it being Sondheim doesn't mean it will lose money. It's always been a question of equation... Hal Prince didn't skimp... if the same shows ran with smaller costs but the same length perhaps most of their shows would have made money on broadway. Also very few of his productions have had celebrity casting. For most musicals it's hard to not lose money. Having a celebrity starring in it, or not, is a huge factor for any show. I think Sweeney Todd being one of the most famous Sondheim titles (the most famous and produced besides Into the Woods I'd venture to guess), had a hit movie starring Johnny Depp, being unlike most musical in its content, having Groban's fans coming, Sondheim's fans coming, and the Hamilton cred being thrown around for Kail... I think it'll do fine for awhile, and very likely will not lose money. |
