a very quick attempt at an alt:

There's raven and there's darker chestnut
there's sable and there's bronze

There's coarse and fine
There's straight and curly

There's ink, there's coal
There's ash, there's onyx

... In my quick attempt I didn't find a word used to describe hair quality that also rhymes with curly... but the point is there are lots of words for black or dark... and many for brown too.
