Hal Prince wrote way back when that Follies would have paid off, as Company did and as Night Music did after Follies, if the costs had been the same as the costs on Company. It just cost a huge amount to produce and to run, which the other two did not, although neither was exactly cheap to produce. The original Sweeney would certainly have paid off if it had not been hugely expensive to produce and run. And it would have come closer if they had closed it when Lansbury and Cariou left or if they had closed it within a month or so of them leaving instead of using undistributed profit to keep it going through four months of losses almost every week. |
