Yes, his motives certainly SEEM mixed. It's great that he's using his money and power to support Ain't No Mo'--he is to be commended for that, and I assume he didn't do it just to be able to get a public dig in at A Strange Loop (which I haven't seen). I suppose, were I in his position, I would feel defensive about what he has heard about his treatment in ASL (though I agree, the higher road would be to remain silent if he hasn't seen it--he may have read it, which I concede is not necessarily the same thing). It's a shame, because it detracts from the genuinely good thing his support is doing.
And I find it interesting that he only comments on ASL's treatment of race and not about sexuality. Sometimes absence may be presence. |
