If you are a Tempest fan, or even just temporarily intrigued by it, you may want to consider a trip to DC to see the current coproduction by Round House and Folger Theatres.

Co-directed by Aaron Posner and the magician Teller, it is my favorite production — of any kind — that I’ve seen in the DC area since moving here seven years ago. It’s one of the most memorable two or three Shakespearean productions I’ve ever seen — including some special, high-profile ones during my 10 years living in New York. And, it’s far and away the best “magic show” I’ve seen — including Penn and Teller’s own act.

Versions of this production have appeared regionally since the original 2014 Vegas production. Some reviews of past iterations mention an imbalance between its book scenes, magic, and musical interludes (a band and two fantastic vocalists perform songs from the catalogue of Tom Waits and his wife and writing partner, Kathleen Brennan).

I’ve only seen this iteration, but the balance is flawless, with all key elements, wonderfully integrated.

I should include among them an unforgettable take on Caliban, as performed by two acrobats — who are also miraculously adept with text (!) and are “choreographed” to perfection by Pilobolus.

There is so much novel going on, it would be easy to lose the thread of deep meaning in the play. To the contrary, it all synergizes into an experience that feels more powerful than the sum of its parts. It’s the most meaningful Tempest I’ve experienced.

Last thought: Nate Dendy, the actor playing Ariel, is giving one of those performances that has to be seen to be comprehended. I can’t describe what he does, but he is mesmerizing, delightful, and expert in all ways physical, vocal, and spiritual.

So… if there’s any way you can make it, go!
