| My reading is somewhat less generous. I think "A Strange Loop" was in fact being incredibly snobbish about Tyler Perry and his form of dramatic excess. Usher felt he wanted to do something artistic and Tyler Perry represented the cheap aesthetic he was pushing against. For me, Tyler Perry was an easy target for Jackson. He should have gone against the dominant musical presence of Sondheim and parodied his exclusive white Eurocentric productions. But then he might not have had the white bourgeoisie on his side: making fun of Perry is something they can all agree upon. | |
