And I doubt it was because of Booby Cannavalle or Cherry Jones.
But yes, point taken that he isn't the box office name he used to be. However, I think we've seen though that putting a celebrity in a musical, as opposed to a play, amplifies the effects of the celebrity. Not unlike how Lifespan of a Fact probably benefited from being a lighthearted comedy, whereas Cripple of Inishmaan was much darker.
My guess is that Merrily falls somewhere in between: the mere fact that Radcliffe is in a musical will attract more people than it would if he were in a play - meanwhile, the fact that he's in a cult musical drama (as opposed to a more easily marketable comedy) will turn some of those same people away. And of course, as a musical, Merrily will be much more expensive to run than Lifespan, making it harder to recoup.
I'm really unsure how exactly the math of that will shake out - I don't think it's a foregone conclusion either way. |
