| I haven't heard a roaring, laughing, applauding audience reaction in many years like I did to SOME LIKE IT HOT. The show is ridiculously entertaining and the audience I saw it with went nuts. And deservedly so - it's a well crafted, well composed and fabulously staged and acted old fashioned big Broadway musical. Having suffered through the insipid, stupid drivel that is "& Juliet" a few days earlier, this was a welcome change. The criticisms that the show is too "woke" by having Jerry/Daphne realize that he likes identifying as a woman - well, you'll have to complain to Billy Wilder about that, because it's in the film. The show just took it the next logical step that they couldn't go to in 1959. Besides, I think criticizing basically anything as too "woke" these days just exposes the bigotry of the one doing the criticizing. My 95 year old grandpa still mentions his surprise at how many black people are in commercials - he was raised in an era where there were no blacks on TV at all, except as maids or tap dancers. Times change. | |
