| I never see his name listed among legendary Bway composers although he’s had among the biggest hits. Why not? |

| Donald Trump thinks he is and Margaret Thatcher did as well. ... Trump’s love of Webber’s tunes didn’t just stop at "Evita." ... Often during the 2016 campaign, and well into his first term as president, supporters were treated to several other tunes from Trump’s handpicked playlist. Wedged in between “Don't Stop Believin'” and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" you could find the melancholy “Memory,” from “Cats,” and “Music of the Night,” from “The Phantom of the Opera.” |

| I see his name sometimes listed among them. I am not his biggest fan, but even if most of his shows originated in London, at a certain point in his career, it was expected that they would almost always also be produced on Broadway soon thereafter. He counts as a Broadway composer in a way that Novello didn't and much, much more than, say, Bart, Heneker, Wilson, even Newley and Bricusse, arguably even Coward (although I think Coward might reasonably be regarded as both London and Broadway). Whether he is as good as some of the other greats is a matter of opinion, but at minimum the sheer number of performances on Broadway makes him a very important Broadway person. |

| He is. By many. He’s technically far above a Jerry Herman, for example, and I don’t care what snobbery abounds regarding hits and such. The fact is this question is inflammatory and is not really fair. His work has touched millions, has actually saved a life (mine) and is interesting (not always equally so). Some of his shows are pure fun, some are weak, some rank among the greatest ever written. His shifting meter is consistently interesting, at times revealing. Is he Rodgers (his idol)? No. Is he the equal to a Sondheim? Of course not. And thank god. But, at least in my life and family, he is as equally loved. And I think that’s what actually matters. |

| Well said. I often say - and am often met with eye rolls - ALW’s influence and stature exist and will persist whether you like him or not. As a layman who doesn’t adore some of his work, including the piece* still running, I am awed by his gift for melody. Off the charts. So to speak. *full disclosure; yet posting this I’m now humming “Prima Donna,” as I did, perhaps reluctantly, in my youth. |

| If having the biggest hits were all that’s needed to be considered among the very best, John Grisham and Danielle Steele would be regarded the greatest novelists this country has ever produced. The reality is commercial success and lasting artistic value rarely go together, at least in this country and in this era. |

| If we really want to make a distinction, Lloyd Webber has never written a score FOR Broadway. They all came here from London. It depends on how we're defining terms. (I realize this also affects how we might look at Claude-Michel Schoenberg and Lionel Bart, who have had mega-successes here with shows that are still imports. Also Noel Gay's Me And My Girl.) |

| School of Rock and JCS were first produced on Broadway. Whistle Down the Wind was first produced for Broadway but closed out of town. | |

| But half the score of School of Rock isn't by Lloyd Webber; it's from a movie that was already a musical, written by others, and not originally intended as a Broadway production. JCS was also not originally intended as a Broadway production. It tells us something that the one show Lloyd Webber aimed at Broadway from the beginning failed to arrive. I think one of the fundamental attributes of "great Broadway composer" is that they aimed several productions at Broadway from the very beginning, and that several of them also arrived there. In the spirit of the season, I will refrain from discussing quality of music--or lyrics. (The latter, of course, are not Lloyd Webber's, but since he chooses his lyricists he's ultimately responsible for them.) |

|
| That’s completely wrong. It’s entirely original music by ALW (with some clever repurposing of his Paganini variations from 1977). Not sure where you got your information. |

| Not ENTIRELY. There are a few songs from the film included. But certainly nowhere near "half the score" as was originally suggested. | |

| Just a couple songs. Two songs from the movie are in the Broadway musical. Most of the score for School of Rock was written by ALW. | |

| Thanks - I had forgotten School of Rock was here first. I'm not really counting JCS, as it was recorded in London as a concept album first. He didn't write it for Broadway specifically. :-) |
